Doctor commit suicide in India due to ethnic harassment

October 10, Kathmandu

Protests have erupted over the alleged suicide of a doctor in Chhattisgarh, India.

Dr. Bhagwat Dewangan, a 28-year-old medical student, committed suicide at Jabalpur Medical College after being subjected to ethnic harassment.

His relatives allege that Bhagwat was constantly harassed by the seniors of the college for being poor and lower caste. Unable to endure the constant harassment, Bhagwat committed suicide by setting a trap in the dormitory of a medical college.

However, the management of the medical college said that the allegation was baseless. Police have started investigation into the incident based on the family's complaint.

The relatives of the deceased have lodged a complaint against five doctors of the medical college.

Jabalpur police station in-charge Rakesh Tiwari, who has been investigating the incident for the past nine days, said that some people have been questioned about the incident but it was too late to take a statement from the doctors due to the risk of corona infection.

Bhagwat was doing PG in Orthopedics.

Demonstrations are being held demanding action against the perpetrators of her suicide. The 'Justice for Bhagwat Dewangan' campaign has also been launched on social media.
