Strict laws against rape will be made: PM Oli

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has said that the government is determined to control any kind of murder, violence, extremism and social crime in the country.


Addressing the 65th Police Day celebrations held at the Police Headquarters today, Prime Minister Oli urged the security personnel to be active and fearless against such unwanted activities. He said that it was equally important for the civil society to be aware and vigilant towards such activities.

Prime Minister Oli said the government was determined to take strong action against acid attacks by bringing in new laws, adding that similar laws would be enacted against rape. "As rape is reprehensible and a crime against humanity, the government is preparing to bring in tougher laws to control such activities," Oli said. He directed the Nepal Police to stay away from harassment and social pressure in such incidents. He urged the police to focus on building a crime-free society and contributing to lasting peace by implementing the law.

Prime Minister Oli said that the challenge of the Covid-19 pandemic, which had emerged as an invisible enemy to the world, was widespread and could not be brought under control despite trying to do so in Nepal. He spoke in support of the US Alliance for Democracy, but said that maintaining some independence was important. He urged the general public not to forget the duty of self-discipline and restraint in such a situation. Prime Minister Oli said, "No one should be intimidated by the epidemic of infection. High vigilance should be maintained. We should be vigilant that such a deadly disease can attack and harm anyone at any time." He also said that there was no alternative to taking preventive measures to prevent the spread of the disease during the epidemic. He wished good health to all those who were infected while on duty.

Prime Minister Oli drew the attention of the security personnel to the need to strengthen the internal security system for the prosperity, prosperity and good governance of the country. He mentioned that the foundation of rule of law, human rights and good governance and development would be built on the basis of that. Describing the Nepal Police as the beacon of the country's internal security, Prime Minister Oli expressed the belief that only a sense of duty can fully realize the country's prosperity, rule of law and good governance.

He urged the police to be vigilant as crime has broken down the walls of geographical boundaries, crime network has spread across the country and network based crime is taking shape all over the world. He said that the development of science, information and technology has made human life easier on the one hand but on the other hand its misuse has led to tragic incidents. "If we are not vigilant enough in such a situation, the difficulties may increase. In order not to add to the challenges, we have to face the challenges in a timely manner," said Prime Minister Oli.

Prime Minister Oli said that the technology-savvy but insensitive to social and national responsibilities was a challenge to the spread of self-interested groups. He cautioned the concerned organizations and individuals to pay attention to how such activities can be stopped in a lawful manner.

Reiterating that the government has a zero tolerance policy against corruption, Prime Minister Oli said that the police would play an important role in its full implementation. He urged the police to rise above greed and bring justice to the people. He drew the attention of the police to the misguided information being given to the country and the people. He suggested that the relationship with the people should be strengthened as the trust in the police would weaken and the relationship would weaken and in the long run it would affect peace and security. He informed that the government has always stood by the institutional interest of the police.

Prime Minister Oli urged the common people to be aware of the attempts being made to confuse the country's policy of enhancing nationalism while safeguarding national unity, sovereignty and national integrity. On the occasion, Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa lauded the Nepal Police for fearlessly carrying out its responsibilities in the difficult situation of adding new security challenges due to the Kovid-19 epidemic.

Home Minister Thapa also instructed the police to move ahead with a strategic plan by analyzing the crime trend. He assured that the ministry would provide positive assistance in strengthening the organization. Giving instructions to raise the morale of the police, Home Minister Thapa pointed out the need for a change in thinking as the society and the police cannot be separated from each other. He also expressed confidence that progressive development would take place after the transition to a federal structure. On the occasion, Inspector General of Police Shailesh Thapa Chhetri informed about the work done by the police and said that 40,000 cases are investigated in a year. He also said that the police organization is in the stage of developing the system.

Inspector General of Police Thapa said that a recent investigation had pointed out the need for transparency in the selection criteria for transfers, promotions and deployments. He said the investigation had revealed some facts about why the police had to quit their jobs. During the ceremony, Prime Minister Oli and Home Minister Thapa laid flowers at the Immortal Police Memorial. Meanwhile, retired Inspector General of Police Achyut Krishna Kharel handed over 11 lakh cash to the Inspector General of Police by establishing an 'Achyut-Meena Retirement Fund'. Also, retired  Superintendent of Police Tula Bahadur KC was given the Life Time Achievement Award at the ceremony.
