Gold smuggling in the name of custom clearing

Police on Saturday recovered more than 23 kg of gold from the room of an Indian businessman working as a customs clearing agent in Birgunj.


Police have recovered 22 kg 576 gm gold biscuits, 681 gm gold jewelery and 2 kg 262 gm silver from the flat number 303 of Resham Kothi in Birgunj Metropolitan City-5. The market value of the seized gold is 189.2 million.

The flat where the gold was recovered belongs to Indian businessman Ashok Sinha. Sinha is a customs clearing agent for goods entering Nepal from India. He had been living in flat number 303 on the third floor of Ganesh apartment. Police recovered gold and silver from a drawer inside his flat.

Police had received information that there was gold in Sinha's flat a few days ago. Police, who are stepping up surveillance on the basis of the information, conducted a search on Saturday afternoon.

A police team led by Parsa Superintendent of Police Ganga Pant had reached Ganesh's apartment to search Sinha's flat. Police were preparing to raid Sinha's flat on Friday night. But when Sinha did not come to the room till late at night, the police stopped him.

Police were monitoring the apartment area at night and waiting for Sinha to come to the room. Police searched the room in the presence of people's representatives and locals in the afternoon. Within hours of the gold being recovered, police held a press conference
