Literary Writer Banira Giri Passes Away

May 24, Kathmandu-Poet and novelist Banira Giri has passed away. Although Corona was infected three weeks ago, she died of a heart attack, family sources said. She is also the first woman to do a Ph.D. in Nepali literature.

According to family sources, Giri was pronounced dead at the Civil Hospital in Naya Baneshwor at around 10 pm on Sunday. Giri, a writer who has been battling Alzheimer's disease for three years, was 75 years old.

Born in Kharsang, Darjeeling, India, his prison and non-fiction novels are popular. She came to Nepal from Kharsyang in 1965 A.D. to participate in the National Poetry Competition organized by Pragya Pratisthan. Her first collection of poems, 'A Living Jung Bahadur', won second place in the competition.

She received the 1999 A.D.,  Common Award for her collection of poems 'Shabdatit Shantanu'. She is the first female author to receive the award.

Bandra Giri is survived by her husband, a son, and a daughter.
