Tokyo Olympics: Judo Player Sonia Bhatt Loses With Russian

July 24, Kathmandu - Judo player Sonia Bhatt has lost her first match at the 32nd Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.

In a recent match, Bhatta lost to Russia's Irina Dolgova in the women's 48 kg weight category in the Round of 32. Nepal's 19-year-old Bhatt is ranked 127th in the world judo rankings while Russia's Dolgova is ranked ninth in the world rankings. Bhatt lost to Dolgova on the basis of Ippon. Bhatt could only face the opposition for one minute and 16 seconds. He was selected for the Tokyo Olympics through a wild card. Bhatta had won a bronze medal in the women's under 48 kg weight category at the 13th South Asian Games in Nepal in December, 2008.

In today's shooting competition, Nepal's Kalpana Pariyar also had to face defeat. Gaurika Singh and Alex Shah of swimming and Saraswati Chaudhary of athletics are yet to compete in the Tokyo Olympics. Singh will compete in the women's 100m freestyle, Shah in the men's 100m freestyle and Chaudhary in the women's 100m.
