Karnali Squatters Agitate Against Abolition of A Land Commission

Aug 15, Kathmandu- The squatters of Karnali have become agitated after the government led by Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba dismissed the land issue resolution commission.

The squatters have taken to the streets to protest against the government's crackdown on squatters. On Sunday, thousands of squatters in the state capital, Birendranagar, took to the streets to protest the reorganization of the commission. The squatters have also marched around Birendranagar with placards with slogans like 'Solve our problems, don't hurt us again and again.

According to Bal Krishna Sunar, coordinator of the Landless Squatters Struggle Committee, Birendranagar, about 5,000 landless people from Birendranagar, who have about 14,000 squatters, have joined the agitation. Karnali State Assemblymember and UML leader Yamlal Kandel addressed the gathering.

He said that it was said that the commission was dismissed as the landless were about to get the permits. He said, "The government has shown its character by rejecting the hopes of the landless."

Karnali Pradesh Chairman Rajendra Sharma of Karnali Pradesh said that the Deuba government has committed a great sin against the landless. "Since 1950 A.D., various political parties have been selling the names of landless, squatters," he said. This government is shocked. '

A 501-member struggle committee has been formed in Surkhet with about 54,000 landless squatters, while struggle committees have also been formed in the villages.

Chairman of the District Committee for Resolving Land Issues, Dailekh, Surya Bahadur Shahi informed that work is underway to collect signatures for the street struggle against the dissolution of the Land Commission in Dailekh.
