Beware Of Toxic Sweets

Nov 4, Kathmandu- Sweets are used more in festivals. To attract the consumers, colourful jerry, laddu, peda, lalmohan, lakhamari, rasavari and other sweets are on sale.

In times of congestion and haste, consumers cannot distinguish between quality and non-quality products. So is there any confectionery that uses inedible dyes, stale, expired raw materials? It is also important to be aware of how healthy it is for health. This is because some traders have been using expired ghee, oil, spices and inedible dyes to cover the festive season in the market.

The Department of Food Technology and Quality Control had monitored 249 food markets, food industries and hotels and restaurants from Ashoj 18 to 22. During the monitoring, contaminated and expired food items were found in abundance, the department said.

Expired oil, spices, dairy products and beverages worth Rs 260,000 were seized and destroyed, said Mohan Krishna Maharjan, spokesperson of the department.

A case has been filed against Durga & Chat shop in Kavre on Shrawan 5, 2077 for selling contaminated laddu.
