Dec 21, Kathmandu- Nima Lhamu Sherpa, originally from Rolwaling Village of Dolakha district is the youngest daughter in the Sherpa family who is a renowned personality in the globe. She has not only been successful in gaining fame and respect but has also been able to set an inspirational example to the youths all over the world through her outstanding performance in mountaineering. Daughter of brave late father Chhiring Norbu Sherpa and mother Kinjum Sherpa, Nima is the most cheerful of all her brothers and sisters. Nima is the youngest among 4 sisters. She has managed to make a name for herself as 'The Youngest Female Sagarmatha Climber' in Nepal.
At the very fresh age of 20, she climbed the world's highest peak, Sagarmatha on May 12, 2021. Due to this, the family has set another Guinness world record by climbing an 8000m mountain. She is the youngest of her 12 siblings. Eight out of 12 siblings have succeeded in climbing the world's highest peak. Not just once, but dozens of times. They have another world record of climbing the Sagarmatha which is the world's highest record maintained by the members of the same family.
The first son of the family, Pemba Gyalzen Sherpa had climbed Sagarmatha five times. Pemba Dorjee has climbed Sagarmatha 21 times so far and is also known as speed Pemba. His success and encouragement seem to have helped his other brothers and sisters to climb the Sagarmatha.
He has set many records on Sagarmatha alone. To date, no one has been able to break his record set in 2004 of climbing Sagarmatha in the fastest time i.e; 8 hours and 10 minutes. Not only that, he has climbed Sagarmatha twice without the oxygen gadgets within 4 days and climbed Sagarmatha 3 times within 10 days from China too.
Along with Pemba, his elder brother Purba Thundu Sherpa (5 times), Nima Gyalzen Sherpa(9 times), Phurba Thiley (4 times), Dawa Diki Sherpa(1 time), Nima Lhamu Sherpa(1 time) have been able to climb the Sagarmatha.
Among them, Furba Tenzing Sherpa has set the record several times at the youngest age. Furba has reached the summit of Sagarmatha 14 times so far. He started climbing Sagarmatha at the young age of 17.
Nima Lhamu Sherpa says, “I was able to climb the Sagarmatha inspired by my brothers. So, All the credits go to my brothers". She added, "However, after the successful ascent of Lobuche Himal, I gained the courage to climb the Sagarmatha easily".
Recalling the Sagarmatha trip, she said, "Starting the journey from the base camp of the Sagarmatha and ascending from Camp 4, I questioned myself: when will I be able to step the Sagarmatha? When I finally reached its peak, I felt as if I had reached heaven. I felt like I was flying over the clouds".
Talking to Headline Nepal, she said that she was very delighted with the success of her family, and not only 8 but all 12 members will be climbing the Sagarmatha successfully, setting a strong world record soon.
The world's highest peak, Mount Everest, originally known as the Sagarmatha is currently 8,848.86 meters high. Pasang Lhamu Sherpa was the first Nepalese woman to climb the Sagarmatha on April 22, 1993. Since then, many Nepalese women have been successful in climbing Mt. Everest.
