EU Response To Facebook And Instagram Shut Down

Feb 9, Kathmandu- Meta recently warned Europe to shut down its social networks Facebook and Instagram. Meta has threatened to shut down both Facebook and Instagram in Europe if it does not allow its users to process data.

According to a new rule approved by the European Commission, all companies operating services in Europe must process user data on local servers located within Europe. To date, Meta has been transferring user data from Europe to its US servers.

Meta has warned that social media platforms could be shut down after the new rules block the way to transfer data from Europe to US servers. Two European Union (EU) officials have commented on Meta's warning.

German Finance Minister Robert Habeck and French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire noted that Meta would be forced to comply with new EU rules, or else the company's social media platforms would be banned across Europe.

German Finance Minister Habeck also expressed the view that life is better without Facebook.

"People can live better without Facebook", he said. He also made it clear that the European Union would not shy away from protecting the rights of its people.

Following the remarks of these two officials, there are indications that the European Union will not amend its new rules.
