Chakrabarti  Law College Closed Indefinitely As Fee Dispute Escalates

Jul 27, Kathmandu: Chakrabarti Law College has been closed indefinitely after the controversy escalated after the fee hike. Without giving any reason, the college management suddenly posted the notice that the college has been closed.

Congress, UML, and Maoist-affiliated student organizations started protesting after the college increased the fee of a five-year BA LLB by nearly four lakh rupees at once. They locked the college four days ago. After that, there was no teaching in the college. Yesterday, Tuesday, after the college administration forcibly broke the lock, there was tension between the college administration and the student organization.

Angry students ransacked the college. Then the college administration called the police and brought the situation under control. According to the student organization, some students were injured due to the beating of the police, while one student's head was broken. Similarly, the student organization said that one person's arm and another's leg were broken.

After the situation was brought under control, the college posted notice of indefinite closure. There, student organizations have been sitting on dharna since Wednesday, demanding to reduce the fee and resume teaching immediately. The students of different organizations sat on strike yesterday.

Chakraborty Law College under Purvanchal University increased the fees unnaturally when the admission process for the academic session 2079 started. According to this, the fee of BA LLB which cost 7 lakh 16 thousand 400 has been increased to 10 lakh 70 thousand rupees.

Similarly, the fee for LLM, which was 323 thousand 200, has been increased to 548 thousand. During the talks held on Monday between the student organization and the Balazs administration, the college management said that the maximum fee could be reduced by Rs 50,000, but the student organizations disagreed with that.

The students alleged that the college abused the police administration and even used bouncers to suppress the protest on Tuesday. The student organization has also alleged that the students were locked inside the library and beaten up.
