Number Of People Renouncing Nepali Citizenship Has Increased In Morang

Aug 14, Kathmandu- The number of people filing petitions demanding to renounce citizenship has increased in the district administration office, Morang.

Due to the increase in the number of people leaving the country for marriage or other reasons and going to another country, the number of renouncing citizenship has increased. In the fiscal year 2077/78, there were seven people who submitted petitions demanding to renounce Nepali citizenship in the district administration office, Morang. In the last fiscal year 2078/79, 11 people renounced their citizenship. In the month of Shrawan of the current fiscal year, only five people have renounced their Nepali citizenship.

According to District Administration Office Morang, 16 Nepalese have renounced their Nepali citizenship in 13 months. Most of those who have renounced their Nepali citizenship have submitted an application stating that they are renouncing their Nepali citizenship because they have to take Indian citizenship.

Out of the 16 people who renounced their Nepali citizenship, all but three have applied to revoke their Nepali citizenship in order to acquire Indian citizenship. Among those who renounced their citizenship, 10 are women and six are men.

Likewise, 1,313 people have obtained marital recognition citizenship from Morang district administration office in the fiscal year 2078/79. Most of the people who have taken citizenship through marriage are foreign women who have got married in Nepal. There are more Indian women who get married like that. Due to the law that Nepali women can get Indian citizenship only after seven years of marriage to an Indian man, many people who have got married from Nepal have been delaying and giving up their Nepali citizenship.

In the fiscal year 2078/79, District Administration Office Morang issued 35,689 citizenship certificates based on descendants. District Administration Office Morang has informed that no one has been granted citizenship during this period.
