School Closed In Solukhumbu Due To Extreme Cold Weather

Jan 21, Kathmandu- 110 community schools in Solukhumbu have been closed.

Out of 268 public schools in the district, 110 schools are currently closed due to extreme cold. Except for the Sotang Rural Municipality of the district where there are 8 municipalities, most of the schools in all other municipalities are closed. Out of 17 schools in Khumbu Pasanglhamu Rural Municipality, 14 are closed, while 58 out of 62 schools in Solududhkunda Municipality are closed, Education Branch Coordinator Santosh Kumar Raut informed.

In Khumbu, the school has been closed for 40 days from the second week of December, said Mingma Chiri Sherpa, Chairman of the Khumbu Rural Municipality. It is said that the schools within the municipality will open only after the 25th of February. Bhojraj Karki, the spokesperson of the municipality, said that 12 of the 52 schools in Thulung Dudhkoshi rural municipality are closed.

Similarly, seven out of 20 schools in Mahakulung rural municipality are closed, according to Jhamak Katwal, coordinator of the education branch of the municipality. Head of Education Gomadevi Khadka said that seven of the 22 schools in Likhupike Rural Municipality are closed.

According to Nechasalyan Rural Municipality Vice President Bina Rai, three of the 34 schools in the municipality are closed. Four out of 39 schools in Mapyadudhkosi rural municipality are closed. Khagendra Shrestha, Head of Education Development and Coordination Unit Solukhumbu, said that most of the schools have winter holidays in November/January every year as it is very cold in the Himalayas, while some have winter holidays.
