Tribunal Against Cricketer Lamichhane Postponed Today

Mar 27, Kathmandu: Lawyers of rape-accused cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane have requested the Kathmandu District Court to postpone the hearing of the case scheduled for Monday.

They drew the attention of the court saying that the case was brought up again in the bench of Judge Madhav Prasad Ghimire, who had ordered that Lamichhane should be sent to prison. The lawyer from  Lamichhane’s side drew the attention of the court that the case is technically not admissible as the case is in the bench of the judge who has already ordered the detention of the defendant.

In response, an employee of the District Court Kathmandu said that Judge Ghimire requested a written application. The bench said that the turn can come only after 2 o'clock and asked both sides of the case to contact the bench after lunch. On November 4, 2022, the bench of Kathmandu District Court Judge Madhav Prasad Ghimire ordered the cricketer Lamichhane to be sent to prison for pre-trial detention.

The High Court overturned the order and ordered Lamichhane to be released on a bail of two million rupees and not to go out of Kathmandu without permission. The Supreme Court ordered that Sandeep be allowed to go abroad as well.

The District Court Kathmandu has already obtained the girl's date of birth and other documents from the relevant local government and the witness statement has also been issued. In that sequence, the authority of the document brought by the court staff from the ward office with the help of  Lamichhane’s lawyer has been questioned.
