Apr 7, Kathmandu: Durbar High School (Bhanu Madhyamik Bidyalaya) which is considered a historical heritage has increased the number of students coming for new admissions from classes 7 to 9.
Since there was a lack of students in this school which was run by Zenten. there is a newly constructed building, a clean lunch house, and English medium education with little investment. So, the number of students is increasing every day.
Not only that, the school headmaster Sharda Paudel informed us that the number of students in the upper class is more than the number of seats in recent times because they get scholarships for higher education studies after completing SEE community school. In this school, which is teaching from infant to class 10, students come for new admissions in the lower classes as well. Historical heritage in the heart of Kathmandu, the school called for new admissions for the upcoming academic session from March 31 to April 11.
The school is preparing to admit new students only after the increase in the number of students. Headmaster Paudel also informed that five compulsory subjects Nepali, English, Science, Mathematics, and Social Studies will be based on the syllabus of the (studied) class and each subject will be asked a total of 100 questions with a weightage of 20/20 marks.
The students who pass the standard should be admitted. "Despite selective admission, students from class 7 to 9 have to be divided into three sections", said Principal Paudel. Some of the students coming for new admissions have come from other public schools, while most of them have come from private schools.
Before the earthquake, only 71 students were studying in that school, but now it has increased to 591. 30 teachers are working in this school which was completely damaged by the Gorkha earthquake. "There is no shortage of students in any class. As the number of students is increasing, we are teaching up to 49 students in a class with a capacity of 36 seats", said Principal Paudel. In order to run a secondary school, there is a legal provision that there should be 40 students in each class in rural areas and 55 students in urban areas.
Being a historical and old school, in the early days only children of rich families used to study. At one time, only the children of workers studied in this school, now the children of government employees and local residents are more attracted to this school.
As the school building is big, it is said that there is a problem with only one support staff to do the cleaning work. Similarly, based on the number of students, there is a shortage of teachers for related subjects, said Principal Paudel. In the near future, this school is also planning to conduct 'Fine Art' classes in collaboration with Lalitkala Campus.
Bhanu Secondary School and Sanskrit Secondary School are currently running under the arm of the school, which was rebuilt in its original form after the earthquake eight years ago. There are 40 classrooms in the four-story school building built on nine acres of land.
After the earthquake, the school building was built by the Chinese company Shanghai Construction with the full support of the Chinese government. After the earthquake, the foundation stone for the reconstruction of the school was laid on August 2, 2017, AD. Province head Bidya Devi Bhandari inaugurated the school building along with the reconstruction of Ranipokhari on 21 October 2020 AD.
The school was established in the year 1910 during the time of the then Prime Minister Janga Bahadur Rana to educate Rana's children. In the beginning, clay, brick, and surki (building material made of clay and lime) were used, but now it is made with modern construction materials.
Currently, there are 89 community schools operating in Kampa and there are two other schools including Durbar High School as model schools. The Education Department head Ram Prasad Subedi of Kathmandu Metropolitan City informed that one crore budget has been allocated in the current financial year to run those schools more systematically than others. Chief Subedi said that since the number of students in this school is increasing every day, KMC is also discussing the issue of increasing the number of posts as needed.
