RSP MP Gautam Won The 'Politician of the Year' Award

Oct 05, Kathmandu- Rastriya Swatantra Party MP Sobita Gautam received the 'Young World Politician of the Year' award.

At the One Young World Summit held in Belfast, UK on Thursday, MP Gautam received the award from Kerry Kennedy, President of Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights. Accepting the award, MP Gautam said that she was happy to receive the award as the youngest elected member of parliament in the country where 40 percent of the youth are in the age group of 16 to 40 years.

She recalled that during the election competition, she remembered the blessings of the old generation, the hope of the young generation and the dreams of the future generation.

"I am now representing a one-and-a-half-year-old political party, Rastriya Swatantra Party, which has brought a political storm to the country by changing the way elections are held," she said while accepting the award in Britain on Thursday. "Therefore, I dedicate this award to the people of Kathmandu-2, who trusted a 27-year-old girl as their representative."

She mentioned that about 2000 young people from Nepal are leaving the country in search of good job opportunities every day and said that she is committed to work hard to make a country that imports talents from the world.

During her address, she mentioned that she is determined to address our common global concerns, including disaster management and preparedness, eradicating poverty and corruption, strengthening democracy and the rule of law, and addressing the effects of climate change.

Chile's Minister of Women and Gender Equality, Antonia Cosmica, among 15 parliamentarians and mayors from different countries, including 5 people, received this award.

According to the organizer 'One Young World', among the competitors, along with Gautam, Canada's Arielle Kayabaga, Australia's Ayor Makur Chuot and New Zealand's Moko Tepania and Belgium's Samuel Kogolati have won the award.

The organization selected Gautam as the youngest directly elected member of Parliament in the history of Nepal and a founding member of the RSP on the shortlist. Sobita, who was born in a village without electricity and studied in a government school with no good resources, has been identified as a character who has emerged in politics with her speech being highly liked on social media.

The award was given to five of the world's top politicians who are playing a role in positively influencing young people in their communities and countries. The organization presents The One Young World Politician of the Year Award every year to influential politicians in the 18-35 age group. The One Young World is a British organization established for youth leadership empowerment and development.
