Death Of Third Hong Kong Girl From Flu Sparks Urgent Calls For Public To Get Jabs

Apr 30, Kathmandu- Health officials are warning of more outbreaks of the respiratory disease after a third girl died of the flu in Hong Kong this year.

The Health Protection Center (Center for Health Protection) through a public appeal on Tuesday asked everyone to get vaccinated saying that flu and covid-19 as well as other respiratory infections are at a high level.

In Hong Kong, two girls aged 8 and 6 years died due to flu in the last two weeks, and another 4 girls also died recently.

It is understood that the 4-year-old girl who died last and the 4-year-old girl who died earlier were not vaccinated.

According to official figures, 36 adults died from the flu in Hong Kong from April 7 to 17.

Dr. Wong Hoi-Kei, Senior Medical and Health Officer of the Center's Communicable Diseases Branch, said that those who have not yet been vaccinated should get vaccinated as the vaccine is safe and effective.

About 20 percent of the population living at home, including nearly half of children and the elderly over 65, are still not covered by the vaccine, Hoi said.

The 4-year-old girl, who died last Thursday, had developed a sore throat and fever early last Thursday. He was admitted to a private hospital the following day.

He was moved to the intensive care unit at Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital in Chaiwan on Saturday as his condition worsened.

However, his condition deteriorated and he died on Monday.

Health experts have previously warned that low vaccination rates could prolong the flu season.
