US Confirms First Bird Flu Case Without Animal Contact

Sep 07, Kathmandu- A bird flu infection has been detected in a person in the US state of Missouri without having been in contact with an animal infected with bird flu.

According to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services under the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the adult patient was admitted to the hospital on August 22. It is reported that the patient recovered after being given antiviral medicine against influenza and was discharged from the hospital.

The patient was sent to state and federal laboratories for further testing, as initial tests showed a suspicious type of flu. From the test, it has been confirmed that the patient has H-5 (Bird Flu).

He was the 14th person to be confirmed to have bird flu in the US this year, and the first person to be confirmed to have bird flu without contact with animals.

"No cases of H5 infection have been reported in dairy cows in Missouri," the Missouri Department of Health said, "although bird flu has been confirmed in "some commercial or backyard flocks or wild birds."

All cases of bird flu in 2022 were among farmworkers, including the first. Bird flu is most common in wild birds and chickens, but has recently been seen in mammals as well. An outbreak of bird flu has also been seen in cattle across the country this year.
