Spain To Grant Asylum To Venezuelan Opposition Leader Urrutia

Sep 08, Kathmandu- Madrid announced on Sunday that it will grant political asylum to Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, who is in exile in Spain after a month of living underground in Venezuela.

Gonzalez Urrutia, who opposed the July 28 re-election of President Nicolas Maduro, ignored three consecutive communications to appear before prosecutors and is said to have arrived in Spain on a Spanish military plane.

Earlier, on Monday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Madrid, Jose Manuel Albares, said that Urrutia requested political asylum in a European country and that Spain would grant him that permission.

Stating that Spain is committed to the political rights of all citizens of Venezuela, he confirmed that the leader of the opposition left on a plane of the Spanish army.
