Sep 10, Kathmandu- Officials said the curfew was imposed on Tuesday after continuous demonstrations condemning the killings in the latest round of communal clashes in India's northeastern state of Manipur.
Manipur has been experiencing periodic clashes between the Hindu Meitei majority and the predominantly Christian Kuki community for over a year. At least 11 people were killed in clashes last week after a few months of general peace between the two communities.
According to the police, a curfew was imposed in Imphal, the capital of Manipur, and surrounding valleys after a clash with the police following a student-led protest on Monday.
Police said in a statement that the students pelted stones and plastic bottles on the security personnel who were guarding the state governor's residence in Imphal.
It is mentioned in the statement that the protesters took away their weapons from the police. The local government of Manipur has announced a complete curfew until further orders.
Police have reported an increase in violence in Manipur after protesters last week demanded action over alleged "improvised" projectile weapons and drone attacks.
A long-standing conflict between the Meitei-Kuki communities centers on competition for land and public employment.
Meanwhile, rights activists have accused the local leaders of increasing caste division for political gains.
