Court Rejects The Petition Filed For The Acquittal Of Imran Khan And His Wife

Sep 13, Kathmandu- A court in Pakistan has rejected the complaint filed by the former Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi in the corruption case under the revised National Accountability Ordinance of 1999.

Based on the revised National Responsibility Ordinance, Khan has said that the law protects the cabinet decision by starting the case against him on the basis of the federal cabinet meeting.

The petition, filed by PTI founder Imran Khan, said, "Despite being fully aware that the matter does not fall within the purview of the National Accountability Ordinance (NAO), the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has exceeded its jurisdiction and as the Prime Minister of Pakistan, the applicant seems to have filed a false and misleading reference by chairing a cabinet meeting on December 3, 2019".

The NAB has accused former prime minister Khan of misusing his authority for the proposal and in return, taking about 458 kanals (units measuring the area of land in northern India and Pakistan) of land in Tehsil Sohwa of Jhelum district, 285 million Pakistani rupees (PKR) in cash and donations for the Al-Qadir University Project Trust, among other benefits.

As reported by Dawn newspaper, in the complaint, the Khan couple received 240 kanals of land from co-accused Ahmed Ali Riaz through their accomplice Farhat Shehzadi as compensation for personal gain.

As a public official, former prime minister Khan has been accused of abusing his authority for personal gain, donations and other benefits, Dawn writes. According to the prosecutor, Khan forced the cabinet member to seal and approve the secret document without disclosing the facts.

Former Prime Minister Khan has said that the statement given by the legal affairs spokesperson of the federal government, Barrister Aqeel Malik, gave credence to his suspicions. Petitioners can be tried in a military court, and the provisions of the Pakistan Army Act, 1952 are attracted in this case.

Referring to the statement of Federal Law and Justice Minister Azam Nazir Tarar, Khan said that the case against PTI will be the prerogative of the Punjab government.
