Zero Carbon School Concept Being Implemented

Oct 21, Kathmandu- An educational program to promote and evaluate environmental literacy to deal with climate change has been conducted by Japan's Ministry of Education and Nagoyasangyo University, targeting school-level students.

Under the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology of Japan (EDU-Port Japan), an agreement has been signed between Nagoyasangyo University and Western Regional School in Pokhara for a program to spread literacy about the situation of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and the environment.

This program, which was conducted for the first time in Nepal, is also being implemented in various schools in Taiwan, Vietnam, Indonesia and Japan. This program helps the students will receive environmental knowledge as well as the effects of climate change, and the increase in carbon dioxide, which is the main challenge worldwide. In addition, it is said that it will help students cope with the effects of change and enhance environmental literacy.

It has been conducted in five districts of Gandaki, Bagmati and Lumbini provinces in Kaski, Rupandehi, Bhaktapur, Lalitpur and Bardia. This program has been implemented in Western Central Secondary School, Amarsingh High School, Gandaki Boarding School, SOS Herman Minor Secondary School Sanothimi in Bagmati, United Academy and Shankarnagar Durgadatta Secondary School and Janata Secondary School in Lumbani.

According to Saroj Koirala, the principal of Western School, students will get information about the difference in the amount of carbon dioxide between trees, places with plants, and dense settlements through the study conducted through experimental methods.
