UN Agencies Warn Of Spiraling Sudan Crisis

Oct 26, Kathmandu- The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) have warned that the humanitarian crisis in Sudan continues to grow, noting that millions of people need immediate assistance.

The two agencies, through a joint statement, said that 3.7 million children under the age of five are at risk of malnutrition this year, warning that if they do not receive adequate support, their chances of dying from diseases will increase 11 times.

They emphasized the importance of the United Nations agency responsible for providing aid and technical assistance, including permits, to maintain a sustained presence in all affected communities.

Despite the enormous challenges, UNHCR and UNICEF are renewing their commitment to help those affected in Sudan, providing emergency shelter and basic services including water, education, health care and psychosocial support.

The conflict in Sudan, which began on April 15, 2023, has internally or externally displaced more than 10 million people and pushed millions to the brink of starvation, most of whom are women and children.
