Dec 14, Kathmandu- At least six people have died in a fire at a private hospital in southern India, police said on Friday. More than two dozen people have been injured in the fire.
Building fires are common in India, due to a lack of firefighting equipment and a routine disregard for safety rules.
The fire broke out in the southern state of Tamil Nadu on Thursday night and the cause is still under investigation.
According to the Press Trust of India, all six victims were found unconscious inside a lift at a hospital in the city of Dindigul.
Superintendent of Police A Pradeep said around 30 people were injured but all were in a “stable” condition.
According to the Times of India, the fire started in the reception area on the ground floor and quickly spread to other floors.
The fire comes just weeks after 10 newborns died in a hospital fire in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh.
Earlier this year, six babies died in a similar fire at a children's hospital in New Delhi.
In May, a fire at a crowded amusement park arcade in the state of Gujarat killed at least 27 people, including some children.
