Dec 15, Kathmandu- Bangladesh's exiled Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is living in exile in India, has a new problem.
The interim government led by Mohammad Yunus in Bangladesh has blamed Sheikh Hasina for the disappearance of 3,500 people. This has been proven in an investigation, it is said.
In a development, the Commission of Inquiry into Enforced Disappearances has submitted its interim report implicating former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and several senior officials in the incidents. The report, titled 'Truth Revealed', also recommended that the role of the Rapid Action Battalion in these cases be disbanded as it was controversial.
The commission's chairman, Justice Mainul Islam Chaudhary, submitted the investigation report to the interim government's chief advisor, Professor Muhammad Yunus, at a program organized at the State Guest House Jamuna in Dhaka. The commission said that out of 1,676 complaints of enforced disappearances received, 758 have been investigated so far.
The commission estimates the total number of disappeared people to be over 3,500. It points to a “planned” operation by security forces to cover up these incidents. Judge Chaudhry said the operations were deliberately piecemeal so that personnel would not know the identities of the victims and could deny them.
Chief Advisor Professor Yunus praised the commission's efforts and pledged full cooperation in the investigation. He said, "You are doing very important work, the government is ready to provide you with any assistance."
In an unprecedented move, Ansari, the government's top adviser, announced plans to visit some of the prisons and secret detention centres identified by the commission to understand the plight of the victims.
