Nepal-India Army Chiefs 'Silent' On Agnipath

Dec 16, Kathmandu- The army chiefs of Nepal and India have visited each other's countries at intervals of about two weeks.

On Mangsir 5, Indian Army Chief Upendra Dwivedi visited Nepal. During his visit to Nepal, he was conferred the rank of Honorary General by President Ram Chandra Poudel on Mangsir 6. He returned home on Mangsir 9.

Nepal Army Chief of Staff Ashok Raj Sigdel returned home on Sunday, the 16th day after the Indian Army Chief returned to India on Mangsir 26.

Sigdel was awarded the honorary rank of Major General of the Indian Army by Indian President Draupadi Murmu on Mangsir 27. Indian Army Chief Dwivedi had announced during his visit to Nepal that he would provide a ‘Target Pactrish Drone’ and health equipment related to ‘field hospitals’.

It is a decades-old tradition to confer honorary general status on the chiefs of the armies of Nepal and India.

The Chief of Army Staff of the Nepal Army, General Sigdel, is conferred honorary general status by the Supreme Commander of the Indian Army, i.e. the President of India, and the Chief of the Army Staff of the three branches of the Indian Army, the Army, is usually conferred honorary general status by the President of Nepal. The Indian Army has three branches and three chiefs, namely the Army, Navy, and Air Force.

According to experts, the ‘Honorary General’ title between the two countries is very important and meaningful. This confirms the strength of the relationship between the Nepali and Indian forces.

Nepali Army Spokesperson Gaurav KC says that the tradition of one country conferring the honorary rank of General on the army chief of another country is old. So far, 24 Indian army chiefs have received the honorary title of Nepal, while 19 Nepalese army chiefs have received this title in India.

According to Spokesperson KC, the cooperation, coordination, visits, training, exercises and other activities between the military organizations through bilateral visits have made the relations between the two countries fruitful.
