Eight Injured In A Hammer Attack At Japanese University

Jan 10, Kathmandu- At least eight people were injured in a hammer attack at a university in the Japanese capital Tokyo on Friday. The attack took place at noon on the Tama campus of Hosei University, state broadcaster NHK reported, citing a police source.

According to GG Press, a 20-year-old sociology student at the same campus has been arrested for her involvement in the attack. According to FNN, university staff stopped the attacker from further attacks.

It is a rare case of violent crime in Japan. Police told AFP that they had no immediate details about the incident. Japan has strict gun control laws.

Live footage from NHK showed a line of emergency vehicles, sirens and red and blue lights flashing, at the campus in the suburban Machida district of the Japanese capital.

Japan has been plagued by occasional stabbings and occasional shootings, including the assassination of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in 2022.

Last December, a student was stabbed to death at a McDonald's restaurant in southwestern Japan, and another was injured. A man has been arrested in connection with the attack.

In 2019, two people, including a schoolgirl, were stabbed to death in the city of Kawasaki, Japan. More than a dozen were injured.

In the incident, a 51-year-old attacker attacked a group of children. An investigation confirmed that he had been stabbed in the neck.
