South Korean President Yoon's Impeachment Trial Begins

Jan 14, Kathmandu- The impeachment trial of suspended President of South Korea Yoon Suk Yeol began on Tuesday.

The country's constitutional court is preparing to evaluate whether to remove him from office as president over the failed martial law attempt.

His December 3 seizure of power plunged South Korea into its worst political crisis in decades after Yoon ordered the military to storm parliament in a failed attempt to prevent lawmakers from voting on the suspension of civilian rule.

He was immediately impeached and suspended from duty. But he has since remained in hiding at his residence, refusing summons from authorities investigating the coup and using the presidential security team to evade arrest.

Lawmakers also impeached the UN's acting president last month, plunging the country into further political instability, and the current acting president has been reluctant to intervene in the impasse.
