Jan 14, Kathmandu- More than 100 workers have died after being trapped in a gold mine in South Africa.
According to international media, more than 400 workers had been trapped in the mine for two months. They were all arrested while illegally entering the mine to mine for gold.
A special mine rescue team has been dispatched to the scene for relief and rescue after a large number of workers died inside the mine. According to news reports, the workers died due to hunger and thirst.
So far, 13 bodies have been recovered. In particular, a cellphone was found belonging to the rescued workers, which contained two videos. These videos show dozens of bodies wrapped in polythene.
According to Mining Affected Communities United in Action (MACUA), a social organization affiliated with miners, police have been cracking down on illegal mining since last November. The police had tried to seal the mine.
For this, the workers were also urged to come out, but the workers refused to leave the mine for fear of being arrested. Since then, the workers have been trapped in the mine for a long time.
MACUA said that after the workers refused, the police removed the ropes and pulleys used to enter and exit the mine. The workers were then stranded in the mine.
According to the South African newspaper Sunday Times, rescue teams have prepared a cage that is being lowered 3 kilometers into the mine. This cage is being used to pull out the remaining survivors first.
