Jan 20, Kathmandu- Sanjay Roy, who was convicted of the rape and murder of an Indian doctor, has been sentenced to life imprisonment.

An Indian court on Saturday convicted 33-year-old Roy of raping and murdering a doctor. On August 9, 2024, a trainee doctor was raped and murdered in a seminar room at a government hospital in Kolkata. The victim's body was found in blood all over. Following the incident, doctors at government hospitals demanded more security and thousands of citizens in Kolkata and other parts of India joined the doctors' protest in solidarity.

The trial of the accused Sanjay Roy was fast-tracked and the arguments in the case were completed only a week ago. After convicting Roy, a civilian volunteer at the hospital, of rape and murder, Judge Anirban Das said that he would be sentenced on Monday. During the hearing, Roy had consistently maintained his innocence and that he was framed.
