Jan 23, Kathmandu- Thirteen people, including three Nepalis, have died in a train accident in Maharashtra, India, local media reported. Seven of the deceased, including three Nepalese, have been identified. The others are yet to be identified.
It is reported that 11-year-old Himu Nandaram Bishwokarma, 23-year-old Lachhi Ram Pasi, and 43-year-old Kamala Nabin Bhandari from Nepal died in the accident. There is no information about where they are from in Nepal.
Indian media reported that a stampede broke out in Jalgaon district after reports of a fire on the Pushpak Express train traveling from Lucknow to Mumbai, and that they were crushed to death by an oncoming train.
"The train had to stop after receiving reports of a fire in one of the coaches. Passengers started running after it stopped. They were killed when they were hit by the Karnataka Express coming from another direction," the BBC reported, citing an eyewitness. The Karnataka Express was reportedly travelling from Manmad to Bhusawal.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has expressed grief over the incident. He has directed the concerned authorities to rescue the injured and provide them with medical treatment.
