Jan 31, Kathmandu- US President Donald Trump on Thursday repeated his threat to impose 100 percent tariffs on BRICS nations as the deadline for imposing tariffs on Canada and Mexico approaches.
Earlier, Trump had threatened to impose a 100 percent tax on the BRICS nations, including Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, if they created a currency that competed with the US dollar.
“The BRICS countries are trying to move away from the dollar and we are sitting back and watching,” he wrote on his Truth social platform. “We will demand a commitment from these seemingly hostile countries that they will neither create a new BRICS currency, nor support any other currency to replace the powerful US dollar, otherwise they will face 100 percent tariffs.”
Trump's comments on the BRICS tariffs come just days before a February 1 deadline set shortly after he took office, under which he has threatened to impose a 25 percent tariff on neighbouring Canada and Mexico if they do not crack down on illegal immigrants and the flow of deadly fentanyl across the US border.
Trump has threatened to impose an additional 10 percent tariff on goods from February 1 on China, a member of the BRICS group, over trade imbalances and its alleged role in the supply of US fentanyl. RSS
