Ministry's Notice To Designate Contact Offices For Social Media Being Registered In Nepal

Feb 03, Kathmandu- The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology has issued a notice to register social media platforms operating or intending to operate in Nepal.

On Monday, the ministry said that social media platforms operating or intending to operate in Nepal must be registered with the ministry based on the ‘Directives for Managing the Use of Social Media, 2023’. The notice also states that each social media platform must designate its contact office within Nepal.

According to Directive 6 of the directive, social media platforms must cooperate with the ministry to ensure compliance with the provisions set out. The ministry has stated that if they violate the provisions, they may be banned from operating.

The ministry has stated that social media platforms should help promote Nepal's tourism, provide support in promoting cybersecurity and digital literacy across the country, contribute to digital transformation to improve the quality of the education system in schools and colleges, implement technology for filtering and managing content in Nepali and other national languages, and assist the government in removing content that disrupts social harmony and encourages cybercrime.
