Second Corruption Case Filed Against Nagarjuna Mayor Basnet

Feb 09, Kathmandu- The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has filed a corruption case against suspended mayor of Nagarjuna Municipality Mohan Bahadur Basnet on charges of abusing his position to amass illegal wealth.

The CIAA has claimed that Basnet illegally acquired Rs 86.9 million and that the amount was earned through corruption.

According to the authority's claim, Basnet, who has a total wealth of 286.5 million rupees, earned only 199.5 million rupees legally. The CIAA claims that the remaining amount was earned through corruption.

During this period, the CIAA claims that he purchased land, built and renovated houses, and purchased apartments. The CIAA claims that he paid commissions to various people while buying and selling land and illegally spent money on his sons' weddings.

The authority claims that he gave money to his married son as personal expenses, also gave money to his married daughter, gave money as donations, and also gave money to his helpers who worked at home from illegally acquired assets.

The authority has called it ‘abuse of public office’, saying that the trend of unnatural earnings has increased after he became the mayor of Nagarjuna Municipality. The authority has also filed a case against his wife Urmila Basnet to seize the assets that were hidden and managed by the authority.

The authority has already filed a corruption case against Basnet, mayor of Nagarjuna. The case filed by the Authority against him for illegally engaging in plotting and misusing municipal resources to profit from the plotting is pending in a special court.
