Many Cyber Crimes Are Committed Through Facebook

Feb 11, Kathmandu- Among social media platforms, Facebook has been found to be the most frequently reported source of cybercrime.

According to Cyber Bureau data, about 85 percent of the registered incidents are reported through Facebook alone, said Deepa Bhattarai, an inspector at the bureau.

She made this information at the 'Safer Internet Day 2025' organized by the Nepal Telecommunication Authority, the National Child Rights Council, the Ministry of Women, Children and Senior Citizens, and the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology.

According to the bureau's data, out of 19,730 crime incidents registered in the fiscal year 2080/81, only 16,096 of the complaints received were from Facebook.

Similarly, 5,570 complaints have been registered so far in the current fiscal year alleging that crimes have been committed through Facebook. During this period, a total of 10,702 complaints have been filed, of which 53 cases have been registered.

Cyberbullying, child sexual abuse, revenge porn, bank account hacking, and humiliating acts are being committed through the internet in Nepal.

Most cybercrimes involve close friends, teachers, family members, neighbors, etc., while financial crimes are also committed from outside the country.

"There have been cases where a husband posts nude photos of his wife out of jealousy," Bhattarai said.

Similarly, she said that the younger generation, who spend a lot of time on the internet, is facing a lot of financial crimes.

She also said that in this fiscal year alone, the bureau has been able to recover Rs 45 million from victims of such financial crimes.
