Nepal Army Commander Dhakal Attacked In Beirut

Feb 15, Kathmandu- Nepali Army Lieutenant Colonel Chok Bahadur Dhakal, Deputy Force Commander of the UNIFIL mission, has been injured in an attack near the Lebanese capital Beirut. The Nepali Army has said that Dhakal was injured when the convoy he was travelling in was stopped and vandalized by agitated protesters/mobs at 12 midnight local time on Friday.

He was immediately rescued and taken to a UN-level hospital after the incident. The hospital said he is currently out of danger, according to a statement issued by the military base. The Deputy Force Commander was returning home after completing his term.

Regarding the incident, the UNIFIL Mission Headquarters issued a statement expressing shock at the attack on peacekeepers serving to establish security and stability in South Lebanon.

Condemning such an attack on peacekeepers, the United Nations has called on the Lebanese government to immediately investigate the incident and take necessary action. The Lebanese Prime Minister and the Lebanese Armed Forces have said that they will immediately investigate and bring the individuals/groups involved to justice.
