Feb 17, Kathmandu- The Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) university in Odisha, India, has forcibly evicted Nepali students from their hostels. After the university evicted them, Nepali students were abandoned.
Speaking to Indian media ANI, Nepali student Anil Prasad Yadav said, "We were pushed out of the hostel today. Yesterday, a Nepali student was found dead. We went to the international office to get more information about this, but nothing was said. We sat there all night. From there, we were sent back to the hostel."
Finally, we were asked to pack up and leave within an hour. We do not have anything. We do not know how we will go. We haven't even had food."
A Nepali student was found dead in the hostel of KIIT on Sunday evening. After students protested over the death of a Nepali female student due to the university's negligence, the Registrar's Office published a notice asking Nepali students to vacate the campus.
"We were protesting for the dead female student. We don’t know what their intentions were, but we were forced to vacate the hostel. There is no fixed train schedule, I have no money. We haven’t even had food. We are helpless...we have received information that all students from Nepal have been suspended and they should vacate the hostel as soon as possible".
"The staff entered the hostel, made us vacate and even beat up those who did not leave quickly," Rajan Gupta from Nepal told NNI.
A Nepali student was found dead under mysterious circumstances in the hostel of KIIT University in Patiya area of Bhubaneswar on Sunday evening.
The deceased has been identified as Prakriti Lamsal, a third-year B.Tech student. The cause of her death is yet to be ascertained.
It is suspected that she committed suicide after being allegedly molested by a male student of mechanical engineering, a third-year student of the same university.
A user on social media X has also posted an audio clip of the male student abusing Prakriti.
Last month, Prakriti reported the harassment to the university's International Relations Office (IRO). However as the university did not take any action, sources claim that nature chose the path of suicide.
Following the incident, angry university students came to the streets and protested outside the university entrance. They shouted slogans saying that Prakriti's death was due to the negligence of university officials.
According to sources, the body of the deceased has now been taken to the Capital Hospital for postmortem.
Addressing the media, Registrar of the University Gyanaranjan Mohanty gave information about Prakriti's relations. She had been staying in the hostel and said that she took the step due to a tense relationship with her partner. She said that the family members of Prakriti have been informed about the incident.
“The accused boy, who is studying in the same year at the university, has been arrested by the police,” she said.
