Feb 18, Kathmandu- The American tech company Meta has announced plans to lay the longest underwater cable in the world. This cable, which will be laid under the sea, will connect countries such as the United States, India, South Africa, Brazil and others.
Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and others, will lay a 50,000-kilometer-long cable under the sea under the plan. This will be a cable longer than the circumference of the Earth.
The 24-pair fibre system is expected to be ideal for high-speed internet and AI projects.
Meta has named this project Waterworth. “Project Waterworth will provide industry-leading connectivity to the US, India, Brazil, South Africa and other key regions,” the company said in a blog post.
“This project will open up opportunities for greater economic cooperation, digital inclusion and technological development in these regions,” the company said.
More than 95 percent of the world’s internet traffic is transferred via undersea cables. There are concerns that these cables could be targeted in times of attack, accident, geopolitical tension and conflict.
