Army And Mountain Movers Win Open Basketball Tournament

Feb 24, Kathmandu- Nepal Army and Mountain Movers won the Open Basketball Tournament title on Sunday. Army became the champion in the men's and Movers in the women's categories. Both managed to win the title while remaining undefeated.

Army defeated Play Box by a wide margin of 111-71 in the men's final of the tournament jointly organized by the Nepal Democratic Sports Association, Lalitpur and Nakhipot Youth Club. This was the highest score of the tournament. Army's Nischal Maharjan scored 28 points.

Army, which took a 33-18 lead in the first quarter, maintained it until the end. Army performed 29-20 in the second, 27-22 in the third and 22-11 in the fourth. Along with the title, Army received a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh and Play Box Rs 50,000.

In the women's title match held at the covered hall of the host club in Nakhipot, Movers defeated Kirtipur 62-50. Movers' Samjhana Shah scored 15. Kirtipur also lost to Movers in the round-robin.

The main basis for the victory was the lead of Movers in the first quarter 20-14, in the second 18-10 and in the third 18-13. Although Kirtipur scored 13-6 in the fourth quarter, it was not enough for the victory. The winner Movers received a cash prize of 50 thousand and the runner-up Kirtipur received 25 thousand.

Binod Maharjan of Army and Tshering Choki Sherpa of Bhumar were declared the 'Most Valuable Player' in the men's competition and in the women's competition. Binod received a cash prize of 20 thousand and Tshiring received a cash prize of 15 thousand.

Sarjok Pun Magar of organizer Nakhipot in the men's competition and Mili Lama Tamang of ISA Nepal in the women's competition were selected as the emerging players. Both were given a cash prize of 5 thousand each.
