Mar 14, Kathmandu- The Mediterranean Sea has become Europe's deepest garbage dump, according to a new study. According to the study, plastic waste generated by human activities was found 5 thousand 112 meters deep i.e. 16 thousand 707 feet below the 'Calypso Deep' of the Ionian Sea.
Scientists involved in the study said that out of a total of 167 types of objects found at the bottom of the sea, most were plastic containers. A study published in the 'Marine Pollution Bulletin' has revealed that 88 percent of the waste found in the sea is made up of plastic.
The study also mentions that marine life is also being killed due to garbage and many species are on the verge of extinction. 'Dead zones' are also being formed in the sea due to garbage. 'Dead zones' mean that the possibility of life is ending in these marine areas.
According to a report by the Environmental Protection Agency, 8 to 12 metric tons of plastic are thrown into the sea every year. Currently, 15 to 51 trillion pieces of plastic are floating on the surface of the seas around the world.
