Council Asked For Clarification From Two Doctors At Dhulikhel Hospital

Mar 18, Kathmandu- The Nepal Medical Council has sought clarification from two doctors from the Department of Psychiatry at Kathmandu University School of Medical Sciences (Dhulikhel Hospital).

The council has sought clarification from them, asking them why they are not being taken into action.

A student studying MD first year of Dhulikhel Hospital tried to commit suicide last Falgun 4 (Sunday). They alleged that the reason for committing suicide was constant pressure and abuse from the doctor.

The Nepal Medical Council had recorded statements from both the accused doctor and the victim in this regard.

The Medical Council on Sunday clarified why action should not be taken against the head of the Department of Mental Health, Dr. Ajay Risal, and Dr. Deepak Kunwar of the same department based on the statements.

The five-member committee comprising the coordinator of the council's professional conduct committee, Dr. Bishwaraj Dawadi, co-coordinator Dr. Kunjang Sherpa, and members Dr. Anand Kumar Sharma, Dr. Rupak BK Ghimire, and Rajeshwor Adhikari, recorded the statements.

According to the member, no decision has been made on taking action. The member said that the decision on what action will be taken will be based on the explanations given by them.

The council had suspended four doctors working in the department for a week from working. Kathmandu University, School of Medical Sciences, had also instructed them not to engage in any work as they were investigating the matter.

The resident doctor has expressed his suspicions about the incident and demanded a thorough investigation. They allege that this is not the first incident but has happened several times before.

They say that there has been repeated misbehavior by the department head and associate professor. A year ago, a student attempted suicide due to misbehavior and another student dropped out of school.
