MCC Work Continues Consulting Services Sought For Road Expansion

Mar 20, Kathmandu- Despite a 90-day moratorium imposed by US President Donald Trump, work funded by the MCC is continuing.

MCA Nepal, chaired by the Finance Secretary, issued a notice on Thursday to procure consulting services to monitor its project.

US President Trump has suspended all types of foreign aid. In the process, several USAID programs have been canceled. A letter was received by the Ministry of Finance stating that the MCC project, which had been in doubt for a long time, has also been suspended.

Finance Ministry officials are confident that the MCC will resume despite the suspension. The MCA office established in Nepal has also resumed its regular work.

On Thursday, a request for consultancy services was made for the inspection service of the road that is to be expanded in the Dhankhola-Lamahi road section of the East-West Highway.

Similarly, consulting services have been sought for the periodic maintenance of the Narayangadh-Mugling road. MCA Nepal has issued a notice today, Thursday. The consultant has asked to apply by 24 April 2025.

“MCC is currently in a state of suspension. The chairman (Finance Secretary) has not called a meeting to discuss how to move forward,” said a board member of MCA Nepal, “but it seems that the grant will be resumed. Even if the grant is cut, it will continue because the infrastructure needed by Nepal is being built.”

MCA Nepal had invited bids in November for the construction of a 297-kilometer transmission line. The contracting process for the transmission line is currently underway.

“The transmission line tender process that took place in November is proceeding as planned,” said an MCA Nepal official. “Despite some uncertainty, our regular work is ongoing. We have not suspended any work.”

MCA Nepal was established to spend $697 million. Of this, $500 million will be provided by the US government and $197 million by the Nepali government.

The MCA will build Nepal’s electricity infrastructure and improve the quality of roads. Just before Donald Trump became president again, the MCA decided to provide an additional $50 million in grants to Nepal.
