Mar 22, Kathmandu- The incident of the living ox's thigh being cut has worried many in Ilam. This is not the first time this has happened. The ox has died due to the repeated cutting and taking away of the meat.
The incident happened in Suryodaya Municipality-6 Kanyam. Ram Rai said that the ox died after the ox's owner said that its thigh's meat was taken at night. "An ox (black) had already died due to the same incident. Another incident happened on Friday night", he expressed his sorrow, "Now my cowshed is empty".
According to him, after one of the oxs had died, the meat of another (red) ox was slaughtered for the first time on Falgun 16. The meat of the same injured ox was slaughtered for the second time on Friday night.
"The part where the meat was cut was going to be buried with herbs and medicinal roots, but they took it from the same leg again", Rai said emotionally. He said that the last time somebody cut about five kilos of meat from the thigh of the injured ox.
He said that he only found out about it when he went to the field to mow grass in the morning because the cowshed was some distance from his house. "When I reached the cowshed, the ox was already dead", he said.
Rai has demanded action against those who brutally slaughtered the cattle tied to the ground and took the meat.
Rai lives in Kanyam as a nomad. He has been farming other people's fields to support his family. "Although the house and the cowshed are a hundred meters away, I did not know about the incident because the land where the cowshed is located is a little hilly side", he said. "I had returned the previous day after giving grass and fodder, but when I went in the morning, the ox was dead".
Local journalist Gopal Giri has posted a video of an ox that died after its thigh was cut on Facebook, urging the police and public representatives to search for the person or group involved in the incident.
Victim Rai says that such incidents are happening frequently in the village. "Sometimes meat is cut from the thigh of a ox, sometimes a goat is stolen, and even when the police and public representatives are informed, no action is being taken yet", he said. "I had informed the police earlier, they said to take photos and videos. I had reported some youths because I was suspicious, but no action was taken". He said that he could not think of what to do now after the ox died while farming.
Ward Chairman Shiva Kumar Basnet also says that many other irregularities have increased in the village where the incident occurred. "Meat, alcohol and quarrels have delayed development. Even when incidents like this happen, no one files a complaint, the public representatives are the ones who are being harassed", he said.
