Indian Leaders To Visit Nepal Next Week Amid Protests

Mar 28, Kathmandu- Some Indian leaders who played an active role in the 2062-63 movement, while the movement to restore the monarchy was ongoing in Nepal, are scheduled to visit Nepal next week.

They are expected to attend a program organized by the Ganeshman Singh Foundation on Chaitra 25. According to information received, former MP and advisor to the Janata Dal (United) led by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, KC Tyagi, socialist leader Sudhindra Bhadauria and other leaders are expected to attend the Ganeshman Singh 'Memorial Lecture' program. Both these leaders were active supporters of the people's movement in 062-063.

Similarly, Bhagat Singh Koshyari, a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party and former Chief Minister of the North Zone and the coordinator of the Indian team of intellectuals formed to study various aspects of Nepal-India relations and reform them, is also expected to participate in the program.

The Indian government has not expressed any official response to the movement to restore the monarchy in Nepal, but Koshyari, a leader considered close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is seen as an unofficial 'ambassador'.

After the 2062-63 movement, King Gyanendra agitated and reached an agreement with the parties, but Girija Prasad Koirala took the oath as Prime Minister and returned to his constitutional status, but was later declared a 'republic' under pressure from the Indian administration.

The one-day program organized by the Ganeshman Singh Foundation will be chaired by Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba. The program will also discuss the contribution of former Indian Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar in strengthening Nepal-India relations.
