Mar 29, Kathmandu- The death toll from a powerful earthquake that struck Myanmar on Friday has surpassed 1,000. Myanmar's military junta has said that 1,007 people have died in the earthquake.
The number of people injured in the earthquake has reached 2,389. According to the junta government, 30 people are missing. 1,591 houses have been damaged in the Mandalay region, where the earthquake's epicenter is located. At least 90 people are trapped in a building in the Mandalay region, according to the BBC.
The earthquake also claimed the lives of some people in Thailand's capital, Bangkok. Fifteen people have died. Thai Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnwirakul said efforts are underway to rescue at least 15 people trapped in the rubble. He said at least 100 people are missing.
A 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck northwest of the Myanmar city of Sagaing on Friday afternoon. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said a 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck the same area minutes later.
The USGS said the quake struck at a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles). The epicenter was 17 kilometers (11 miles) from the Myanmar city of Mandalay. Mandalay is home to about 1.5 million people.
