Teachers Announce Indefinite Street Protest

Apr 01, Kathmandu- The Nepal Teachers Association has announced an indefinite street protest starting tomorrow, Wednesday. The federation announced the protest at a press conference today.

According to Federation President Laxmi Kishore Subedi, the Federation has been on strike since Magh 20. In the meantime, protest programs have been completed at the municipal, district and provincial levels. As the final program under the first phase, a large-scale street protest meeting was held in Kathmandu on Falgun 24.

"Under the second phase, a sit-in was held at the central offices of political parties from 27th Falgun 2081 to 5th Chaitra 2081, while a relay hunger strike was held at the office premises of the Education and Human Resource Development Center from 7th Chaitra to 15th Chaitra. As the final and decisive program of the second phase, the 'Let's Go to Kathmandu Campaign' has been launched from 20th Chaitra 2081. Under this, an indefinite educational street movement will be launched with the participation of all teachers and staff across the country," he said.

He informed that this movement will continue until a new School Education Act is issued that can solve all the problems of all types of teachers and school employees including permanent, relief, former upper secondary schools, learning grants, child development classes, temporary/contract, technical stream, special education and institutional schools and pave a clear path towards the provision of quality school education.

"The objective of this movement is to force the state party to issue a quality school education, student and teacher (employee-friendly progressive school education act in a way that addresses all the agreements made in the past between the federation and the government", he said. "To achieve this objective, our movement will be peaceful, disciplined and dignified. This movement is not only related to addressing the professional demands of teachers and employees, it has also raised its voice in favor of quality school education and the welfare and advancement of students".

Teachers are set to launch a Kathmandu-centric protest demanding that the agreements reached with the government be implemented. Teachers have already announced that they will not even examine SEE transcripts.
