Talks with teachers postponed: Education Minister

Apr 04, Kathmandu- The Nepal Teachers Federation has refused to attend the talks called by the government. The government's attempt to hold discussions with teachers on Friday failed after the federation did not attend the talks despite being invited to Singha Durbar for talks.

Minister for Education, Science and Technology Bidya Bhattarai informed that the federation did not attend the talks despite sending a phone call and a formal letter to the teachers.

After sending a letter to the federation, acting Prime Minister Prakash Man Singh and Education Minister Bhattarai reached the Ministry of Urban Development and prepared for talks. Minister Bhattarai said that the talks were postponed for the time being due to the absence of teachers. She said that the government is ready to move forward with the School Education Bill, addressing the demands of the teachers.

The federation, however, has stated that there is no need to sit in talks as the School Education Bill is the only issue to move forward quickly. The federation has suggested that the government move forward with the Act rather than talks. Federation President Laxmikishore Subedi said, “There is no point in talks. Let everyone’s attention be focused on bringing the Act first.”

Teachers from all over the country are gathering in Kathmandu and protesting, demanding that the School Education Bill be brought to a conclusion quickly.
