Myanmar earthquake: death toll exceeds 3,300

Apr 05, Kathmandu- The death toll from a major earthquake in Myanmar has risen to more than 3,300.

The March 28 earthquake has destroyed buildings and infrastructure across the country. 3,354 people have died. 4,508 have been injured. The number of missing people has reached 220, according to new figures published by state media.

More than a week after the disaster, many people in the country are still homeless, either because their homes have been destroyed or because they are forced to sleep outside for fear of further collapse.

The 7.7-magnitude earthquake may have affected more than three million people, according to a United Nations estimate. This has compounded the previous challenges posed by a four-year civil war.

The United Nations’ top aid official met with victims in the central Myanmar city of Mandalay on Saturday. Mandalay is located near the epicenter of the earthquake and has now suffered severe damage throughout the city.

“The devastation is staggering,” Tom Fletcher wrote in a post on X, “and the world must stand with the people of Myanmar.”

The new death toll was announced on Friday after the country’s military junta chief Min Aung Hlaing returned from a rare foreign trip to a regional summit in Bangkok. In Bangkok, the junta chief met with leaders including the prime ministers of Thailand and India.
