Apr 07, Kathmandu- Flooding and storms have killed 18 people in the US South and Midwest.
The death toll from Saturday's storm and subsequent flooding caused by continuous rain has reached 18 as of Sunday, the US news agency Associated Press (AP) reported.
The deaths include 10 in western Tennessee, two in Kentucky, two in Missouri, one in Indiana and one in Arkansas. The address of the other two people has not been disclosed.
The storm spread from Arkansas to Ohio and continuous heavy rains in Tennessee and Kentucky caused rivers to overflow and cause flooding. The National Weather Service said that the flooding and storms caused the most damage in Tennessee.
10 people have died due to the storm in Tennessee. More than 1,000 homes, businesses, roads and public places have been submerged.
A 9-year-old boy was swept away by floodwaters while walking to his school bus in Kentucky, and a 5-year-old boy was killed when a tree fell on his house in Arkansas, police said. A 16-year-old volunteer died in an accident while rescuing people trapped by the storm in Missouri.
The river was at 47 feet on Sunday and is expected to rise to 49 feet by Monday morning, according to Frankfort Mayor Lane Wilkerson.
