PM Calls Protesting Teachers For Discussion

Apr 18, Kathmandu- Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has called representatives of the Nepal Teachers' Federation, who have been protesting for 16 days, for a discussion.

The Prime Minister's Secretariat has said that the meeting was called at 7 pm on Friday at the Prime Minister's residence in Baluwatar. The officials of the Teachers Federation, who have been protesting on the streets all day, and the officials of the Movement Mobilization Committee are meeting. Nanumaya Parajuli, coordinator of the Movement Mobilization Committee, said that the meeting was held to review the movement and decide on further strategies. The officials of the Teachers Federation said that the meeting will also decide on how to present the meeting called by the Prime Minister.

The Teachers' Federation, which has been protesting since Chaitra 20 demanding the promulgation of the Education Act, had earlier refused to attend the talks called by the Ministry of Education. After discussing with Education Minister Bidya Bhattarai, they submitted a 24-point letter of attention.

Although there was a dialogue with Krishna Prasad Kapri, Director General of the Education Development and Human Resource Development Center, last week, there has been no formal dialogue between the government side and the agitating teachers.

This time, the teachers have been putting forward the demand that the Education Act be promulgated according to prior agreement rather than through talks and dialogue.
