Apr 21, Kathmandu- The 30-hour Easter ceasefire declared by Russia has expired. The announcement was made under pressure from US President Donald Trump.
Russia announced the Easter ceasefire after US President Trump said he would abandon efforts to broker a peace deal if Russia and Ukraine did not reach a peace deal soon. Trump had said he would back down from the peace initiative if Russia and Ukraine did not reach a peace deal soon.
According to the news agency Reuters, the US State Department had said it wanted to extend the Easter ceasefire beyond Sunday. But that did not happen.
Russia and Ukraine have accused each other of violating the ceasefire during a 30-hour Easter ceasefire.
However, Trump has not said anything about the ceasefire. In his social media posts, he mentioned that Russia and Ukraine could reach an agreement this week. He also expressed confidence that Russia and Ukraine would be able to do good business with the United States after the agreement.
Trump had said that he would end the Ukraine war within 24 hours of becoming president. Trump has been blaming both sides for the failure to reach a peace agreement.
